ON WHOSE TERMS?

Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me" (Matt 16:24)

Have you ever told God that you love him, that you want a life with him, but that it will be on your terms?

We all do this: we want all that God has for us except we want to determine all the hows and whens. Like the child who wants to make up the rules of a game as he goes along, we think we can cheat and get the prize without the rules.

The first thing to realize is that we really have no terms at all. No one does. God made everything and governs everything; nothing escapes his control.

We should also realize that if we want to follow Christ on our terms we are not really following Christ. Instead of converting to Christianity we convert Christianity to us (Tozer).

They are his terms. Take them or leave them but don't try to convert them. Instead, pray today that the miracle of internal transformation happens - that your heart is changed such that you accept his terms gladly, that you take up your cross and follow him.

Lord, I am sorry for wanting what you have for me on my terms. I pray that I might follow you on your terms, accepting the life you have for me. Help me to pick up my cross and follow you and be filled with gladness. Amen
